DEI Initiatives

The RECREATE Institute and Western strongly value Diversity, equity, and inclusion in all our work. We believe all students should have access to education and opportunities. Western's Outdoor Industry MBA works to support diverse and under-resources populations looking to gain experience within the outdoor recreation industry.

Outdoor Recreation Industry Office selects DEI Fellowship recipients

The Colorado Outdoor Recreation Industry (OREC) Office, in partnership with Western Colorado University, awarded a $10,000 DEI fellowship to Outdoor Industry MBA students Christina Bruno and Robyn Dunne.

"“The Outdoor Recreation Industry Office Fellowship underpins OREC’s mission to drive outdoor industry education and workforce development, specifically through diverse, equitable, and inclusive educational opportunities,” says Nathan Fey, Director of the Colorado Outdoor Recreation Industry Office. “I’m pleased to continue our partnership with Western Colorado University’s MBA Program to empower our future leaders and meet the real needs of our industry.”"

Dr. Scott Borden discusses the Outdoor Industry MBA's DEI promises with In Solidarity Project. Dr. Borden explains that the best part of the OIMBA is "being part of the outdoor industry and nurturing the next generation to support our values of promoting health and wellness; protecting public lands; ensuring inclusive spaces; connecting people to nature; providing meaningful employment." We hope in the future the program will accurately reflect who should be represented in the outdoor industry and diversify leadership in the outdoor industry.
